Perian is a discontinued open-sourceQuickTime component that enabled Apple Inc.’s QuickTime to play several popular video formats not supported natively by QuickTime on macOS.[1] It was a joint development of several earlier open source components based on the multiplatform FFmpeg project's libavcodec and libavformat, as well as liba52 and libmatroska.
It has been featured as the 'Download of the Day' on Lifehacker,[2] as well as on several popular blogs includingArs Technica[3] andThe Unofficial Apple Weblog.[4]
Perian is an open source QuickTime component that enables the latter to play video formats not supported natively by QuickTime on Mac OS X. Listed below is a partial list of the additional codecs supported by QuickTime through Perian: File formats – AVI – DIVX – FLV – MKV Audio types – Windows Media – MPEG Layer I and II Audio.

Unfortunately Perian isn’t being developed anymore. For those who use QuickTime 10 or newer Perian is no longer useful. If this is the case Perian alternative Mac apps can make a big difference. Note 1: Perian doesn't work on Mac OS X Mavericks, Yosemite, Mac 10.11 EI Capitan and Mac OS X Mountain Lion. One continuation based on the source code is actively maintained but does not support QuickTime for OS X Mavericks or later.[6][7]
